In episode 396 astrologers Catherine Urban and Patrick Watson join the podcast to discuss calculating astrological charts by hand, without the use of a computer.
In the episode we discuss how this is the first generation of astrologers in history who don’t need to know how to calculate charts in order to practice astrology, what some of the advantages are of learning how to do it manually, and some related digressions about astrological certification.
This isn’t a full tutorial on how to calculate charts by hand, but instead it is more of a general discussion about the topic, although we do talk about what books you need in order to calculate charts manually and what each of them does.
Here are the books and resources mentioned in this episode:
- Simply Math: A Comprehensive Guide to Easy & Accurate Chart Calculation
- The American Ephemeris 1950-2050 at Midnight
- American Atlas
- The Michelsen Book of Tables

I came up doing charts by hand for years, takes 20 minutes, not very hard. I can’t tell you how many times I came home from an outing with a new friends chart to do. Good times! I am Pluto in Leo generation.
Hi Chris, I’ve been trying to catch up with all your podcasts but for some reason today it’s says I’m unable to access the old ones. I’m currently working my way up to the present and am at about no. 77, finding them really interesting although at times over my head. Was very much into astrology in the 1970’s but somehow lost my way for a while. Any suggestions how I can listen again to you podcasts welcome. Thanks Janet
Try again, it should be working now
Thanks ever so, yep it’s back, hooray
