The Signs of the Zodiac: Qualities and Meanings – Part 2

In episode 180 astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan reconvene for the second of our two part series on the symbolism of the signs of the zodiac.

In this episode we discuss the meanings of the second half of the zodiac signs: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

Part 1 of this series covered the first 6 signs, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, and Virgo, and you can listen to it here: The Signs of the Zodiac: Qualities and Meanings – Part 1

As in the previous episode, at the beginning of each sign we discuss the basic categories associated with it, which are are 1) gender, 2) modality, 3) element, and 4) planetary ruler.

After the introduction is out of the way, we spend about 20-30 minutes talking about the symbolism and meaning of each zodiac sign in order, starting with Libra.

At the top of the show we talk a bit about modern versus traditional planetary rulerships of the signs, and we return to this issue a few times later when discussing certain signs.

This episode is available in both audio and a video versions below.

  • just mentioning that libra is the only zodiac sign which is not represented by an animal but instead portrays an object .. the scales.. weighing things trying to be “objective ”
    best regards

  • Ahoy, Astrowizards 🙂
Cap Sun, Sag Rising here w/ Neptune conjunct my AC. I’m in the middle of having a very Piscean experience w/ Natal SN, Athena, Venus and the Moon conjunct from 0*-5*; Progressed Sun moved in in ~2009, and Mercury went Rx in 2017. Throw in the happy Neptune transit there as well, and I can tell y’all that you Nailed IT…. Thank you for all that you said, as it makes me feel less cray-cray 😉

  • Sounded like Austin was addressing Lenin and Kelly was addressing Lennon – both Aquarius Moons. Another thing that seems more Saturnian than Uranian about Aquarius that I keep seeing is not just an imagining of how things could be better with forward thinking but also how things used to better in specific ways – backward thinking – seeing what’s been lost in history. What’s been left behind on the other side of the wall. I’ve come across many Aquarians that are into primitive tech and that often completely reject modern technology.

    • I’m glad that you mentioned this. One thing that is grossly under represented is Saturn’s (Kronos’) primary association, Father Time. He is the god of all time: past, present and future. Capricorn, being the yin sign of Saturn, is more concerned with the past. Capricorns are typically associated with being conservative, trusting in old ways, historic subjects, etc. Aquarians, the yang children of Saturn, are more concerned with the future. What are the consequences of today’s social norms? Theorizing future truths that will be givens to future generations and will eventually age into Capricorn’s realm. You can very easily get to the vast majority of Capricornian and Aquarian significations by looking at social norms (Saturn) in relation to a timeline (Saturn).

  • Receptive Sag is also very much a thing when it comes to taking in culture. The person that’s cross-country skiing or surfing a horse down the center of the road because they heard an Ethiopian band is performing at the shell in the park is usually a Sag Rising.

  • If you read Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales you will find an unexpected depth and intensity. Disney makes them superficial. In the Little Mermaid, for instance, it is a wise herbalist medicine woman who tries to stop the little mermaid not a monstrous enormous witch. And she is doing so because she sees what will come (and its a tragedy). Also her motivation is not love of the prince but desire for an immortal souls- which she could attain by marrying the prince. In the original, the prince does not choose her, he marries another. At this point, she is stuck above the sea and without hope of an immortal soul. Her fellow mermaids bring her a knife to kill the prince, which would set her free. She refuses and throws herself off the ship. No longer a mermaid, she ironically drowns. But the sea is compassionate and turns her spirit into sea mist. As this mist she can enter the homes of children, and if she finds sufficient goodness there will be granted an immortal soul.

  • The ‘Libra-Hacks’ made me laugh out loud!!! SO ME! With Sun-Moon-Saturn-Jupiter-Pluto in Libra one of the trickiest situations that I have not yet entirely figured out how to constructively deal with, is my extremely mutable (Virgo-Asc, Sag-Pisces) boyfriend saying ‘I don’t care either way, you choose’ …

  • Surprised no mention of glamour with Pisces. The deception of makeup, film. Also, ruling feet, many dancers. Not all musicians Pisces Sun or Asc. Have known many who are Gemini, but w Pisces on an angle. Many addicted to alcohol or other. Almost never on time. It is classic. “Job” starts at dark thirty. A very underworld component. Pluto strong in the story, so Mars (Scorpio) profession for the non classical, non folky types? Know many Gems who play with words. More than Pisces really. Double Libra brother very prissy. Digs the whole but never gets dirty. Condtantly planning and weighing options. Always moving. Very Cardinal.

  • Just listening to this podcast now and listening To Austin speak about Capricorn with doing things right, I can relate …I have Venus, Mars and Saturn in Capricorn and I absolutely get hung up on learning something correctly the first time what ever it may be. For example, when I became interested in learning about astrology, I got so hung up on house systems (I think I still am) because depending on what house system you use some natal planets change the house it’s in and then in Vedic Astrology my Capricorn placements become Sagittarius….Total Capricorn mind-blowing disruption, lol…I absolutely get hung up on the right and best way as well as the best person to learn something new from that in itself becomes a task.

  • Of the ‘modern’ approaches to the zodiac, I find that the zodiac as life-line is the most helpful.
Adding to the Libra discussion, I agree with the concept of Libra positioning themselves as the fulcrum of social relationships, but what was missed is that this can also be the negative side of Libra. It’s a fine line because Libras bring together, but sometimes their established social/group purpose is insidiously self-centered.

  • Bit late here but in the interests of full attribution, I believe the author Austin is referring to in the discussion on Pisces and escapism is Ursula LeGuin – “The direction of escape is toward freedom. So what is ‘escapism’ an accusation of?” – which appears in the collection of her blog posts “No Time to Spare” (and presumably was originally on her blog, though I can’t find the post now).
Somewhat synchronistically I actually had her natal chart open in another tab whilst I was listening to that part of the episode, because I was reminded of her when you were talking about Aquarians’ interest in utopias and dystopias, which is a big focus of her writing (turns out she has Aquarius in the 10th house).

  • Your clarity and comprehensive exploration that stay on-point is insightful, refreshing and so very helpful. Thank you for your dedication and vast knowledge that you so beautifully share.

  • When the student is ready, the teacher/s will appear… if I would’ve started watching you when I first started studying, I wouldn’t have understood! Your podcasts have flipped a switch in my brain… everything makes so much sense.. thank you
