The Signs of the Zodiac: Qualities and Meanings – Part 1

The Signs of the Zodiac: Qualities and Meanings - Part 1

In episode 175 astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan discuss the symbolism of the first six signs of the zodiac: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, and Virgo.

This is the first installment of a two-part series where we plan to give an in-depth overview of the qualities and meanings of all twelve zodiacal signs.

At the beginning of the episode we discuss the basic categories of the signs, which are are 1) gender, 2) modality, 3) element, and 4) planetary ruler.

After the introduction is out of the way, we spend about 20 minutes talking about the symbolism and meaning of each zodiac sign in order, starting with Aries.

This is a followup to a previous episode on the significations of the seven traditional planets, which gave a detailed introduction to the meanings of the planets, and that was complimented by another episode on the meanings of the outer planets.

Part 2 of this series will be recorded sometime next month, and there we will discuss the other six signs of the zodiac: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

  1. Besides the fact that I sincerely look forward to every episode of A.p. i want to let Austin Coppock know how enjoyable i find his daily sending that capture the general mood of the astro weather with poetry and humour.

  2. In regards to your card game, I think it should be like Texas hold ‘em. For this game, however, the cards you’re dealt are your natal placements and the shared cards on the table are the current transits. The number of shared cards for the table would vary depending on the transit being played (ex. ‘Uranus transiting into Taurus’ could be the cards on the table in one deal or ‘Venus Retrograde in Scorpio square Mars’ for a different deal). The number of cards that are used for the hand could also vary per player depending on how the transit aspects with their natal cards in hand (ex. ‘Uranus in Taurus in the 6th house opposing natal Uranus, squaring natal Mars’ for one player vs. ‘Uranus moving into the 7th house with no aspects’ for another player). There could be both extremes of a winner and loser. The hand that has the most benefic placements based on the combination of what’s on the table and what’s in the hand would be the winner versus the hand that has the most Malefic combination being the loser. Probably the person with the most Malefic hand should lose double the wager which was paid to enter the hand – which everyone would have to put in blind before the transit is flipped. It would be a pretty complex game, but very interesting.

  3. Ursula Duffy says:

Loved this! Cannot wait for Part 2! Thank you all.

  4. I’m a bit late here, but I have a question that overlaps with the 2nd episode to come: does Pisces share some of the service quality of Virgo? How do they handle acknowledgment, or lack of it, for the service given?
I mean, they are both passive signs, one Earth and the other Water, so they share this “cold” trait, which seems to keep them in the background although their work is important. Also, Pisces seems more interested in ideal and psychic realms, seeing the big picture, whereas Virgo’s service is more practical and detail oriented.
I always feel there’s something important I’m missing regarding these two signs, so I’d like to hear your thoughts on this.
Thank you for the great work you guys put out.
